Lippert R-Bar is a set of two horizontal aluminium bars that turns the R-Bike Van rear bike rack into a multi-purpose carrier. You bolt the bars to the rack frame and mount Lippert system accessories on them: the R-Skirun carrier for skis and snowboards or the R-Wave carrier for surfboards, SUP boards and canoes. The set includes two bars and mounting hardware. Each bar is 102.5 cm long, 8.72 cm wide and 7 cm high, and the whole set weighs 1.29 kg. The bars are not meant to carry a load directly. They are an intermediate part to which you fix the actual carrier. The R-Skirun and R-Wave carriers have no bars of their own and need R-Bar to be mounted on the rack.

What R-Bar is for
The R-Bike Van rack has a frame matched to the rear doors of a specific van or motorhome model, and rails for bikes. Skis, snowboards, boards or a canoe need a different kind of fixing than a bike, though. R-Bar adds two cross bars to the rack frame, on which you place and bolt the carrier that suits your gear. The manufacturer designed R-Bar specifically for the R-Skirun and R-Wave accessories, so these carriers come without bars of their own and cannot be fitted without this set.
Accessories you can mount on the bars
- R-Skirun - lockable carrier for skis and snowboards. It holds up to four pairs of skis, or two pairs of skis and two snowboards, with a maximum load of 28 kg. It locks with a double-key padlock.
- R-Wave - carrier for water sports gear with a 50 kg load capacity. It takes up to 5 surfboards or SUP boards, 3 boards and 1 canoe, or 1 board and 2 canoes. Boards can be up to 250 cm long.
- With both carriers the manufacturer allows the rear doors to be opened with the gear loaded.
- R-Bar is sold separately and is not included with the R-Skirun or R-Wave carriers.
The R-Bike Van rack
R-Bike Van is a rear door rack for large vans and motorhomes built on them. It carries two bikes, e-bikes included, and three bikes with the R-Bike 3Rail extension. The maximum total load of the rack is 50 kg and it meets the requirements of ECE R26. The manufacturer offers versions for the Fiat Ducato from 2006, Ford Transit from 2014, Mercedes Sprinter from 2020, Volkswagen Crafter from 2017 and Renault Master from 2014. R-Bar fits each of these versions. Keep in mind that the combined weight of the carrier and the gear must not exceed the permitted load of the rack stated in its manual or the permitted load of the vehicle rear doors.
Installation
- Before installation, check that the package contains all the parts listed in the manufacturer manual.
- Bolt the bars to the R-Bike Van rack frame using the mounting hardware from the set.
- After installation, pull and push the bars firmly in all directions to check that they are secure. Repeat the check after fitting the carrier and loading the gear.
- The rack with bars and load must not restrict the rear wiper, and the tow hitch should remain accessible.
Loading and driving
- Check the permitted load of the vehicle and the limits stated in the R-Bike rack manual. Never exceed them.
- Place the load as low as possible and so that it does not touch the doors.
- The load must not cover the lights, indicators or number plate. If it protrudes beyond the vehicle outline, mark it as required by law.
- Check straps, nuts and bolts regularly during the trip.
- Open the rear doors carefully, bearing in mind the space taken by the rack and the load.
- Drive at moderate speed and take care when accelerating, braking and cornering. Wind, potholes and bumps affect handling.
- Take speed bumps at no more than 15 km/h and be careful in automatic car washes.
Care
- Replace worn straps, bolts and nuts.
- Lubricate the adjustment and fixing screws regularly to extend the life of the accessory.
- If a bar falls, check it for cracks or dents. Replace the damaged part.
- Wash the bars with warm water and pH-neutral soap and wipe them dry with a cloth. Do not use solvents.
