The BlueCraft piezo igniter is an original spare part for BlueCraft gas stool burners, also called boiling rings, in the three-leg and four-leg versions. It is the push button you use to light the burner: when you press it, a piezo crystal produces a high-voltage pulse that travels through the spark plug lead to the electrode next to the burner and makes a spark. The igniter needs no batteries and no power supply. It has a black threaded body, a red push button and a metal hex nut that holds it in the hole of the burner frame. You can replace it yourself in a few minutes when the old one stops clicking or sparking.

How a piezo igniter works

Inside the body there is a piezoelectric crystal and a spring-loaded hammer. When you press the button, the hammer strikes the crystal and the crystal releases a short high-voltage pulse. The pulse travels through the lead to the spark plug, the electrode placed right next to the burner, and jumps to the metal of the burner as a spark. The spark lights the gas that flows from the burner while you press and turn the knob. Every press gives one click and one spark, so if the flame does not light at once, you simply press again. There are no batteries that could run flat, so the igniter also works after the burner has been stored for a long time.

When to replace the igniter

• The button does not click or clicks weakly and there is no spark at the burner.
• The button sticks, stays pressed or does not spring back.
• The body is cracked or broken after the burner has been dropped.
• The spark only appears now and then, although the lead and the spark plug are fine.

Check the lead and spark plug first

No spark does not always mean a faulty igniter. Check that the spark plug lead is pushed firmly onto the connector at the back of the igniter, that it is not worn through, and that the electrode next to the burner is not cracked, dirty or bent. The spark only jumps when the tip of the electrode is close to the burner. If the lead or electrode is damaged, replace the spark plug with cable and keep the igniter. If the lead and electrode are intact and the button still gives no spark, replace the igniter.

Replacement step by step

• Close the cylinder valve, disconnect the regulator and wait until the burner has cooled down completely.
• Take a photo of how the lead is connected to the old igniter.
• Pull the spark plug lead off the connector at the back of the igniter.
• Unscrew the hex nut and take the old igniter out of the hole.
• Insert the new igniter into the same hole and fit the nut. Tighten it by hand and then only slightly with a spanner so that you do not damage the thread of the body.
• Push the spark plug lead onto the connector of the new igniter, as in the photo.
• Without gas, press the button a few times and watch in the shade whether a spark jumps at the burner.
• Connect the regulator, open the cylinder valve, check the connections with leak detection spray and light the burner as usual.

Choosing the right part

The igniter fits BlueCraft gas stool burners with three and four legs. Before ordering, compare your old igniter with the photo: red push button, black threaded body and hex nut. If you have a burner from another brand, check that the mounting hole and the lead connector are the same, as igniters from different manufacturers have different threads and connectors.

Safety and care

• Replace the igniter only with the cylinder closed and the burner cold.
• Do not test the spark with your fingers. The pulse has a high voltage and gives an unpleasant jolt.
• After the replacement always check the gas connections for leaks before you light the burner.
• Protect the button from water and boiled-over food. Store the burner in a dry place.
