Thetford C220 blade handle - grey, original kit 200953 with screw and bushing for the cassette toilet

The blade handle is the lever under the bowl of a Thetford C220 toilet that you use to open the blade of the waste-holding tank before using the toilet and to close it afterwards. You use it several times a day, so over time it can crack, wear on its pivot or break after a hard pull. Then the blade no longer opens and closes smoothly. In the Thetford parts catalogue the handle is called blade handle and is sold as kit 200953 in colour 07, which is grey. How the blade handle works

The handle is mounted in the toilet housing under the bowl. When you move it, you open the blade, the flat slide between the bowl and the waste-holding tank. After using the toilet and flushing, you move the handle back and the blade closes. The closed blade seals the tank off from the bathroom and keeps odours in. Before you remove the tank through the service door, the blade must be fully closed, otherwise the cassette locks in the housing.

When to replace the handle

• The handle is cracked or broken.
• The handle has play on its pivot and does not move the blade fully.
• The blade does not open or close even though the blade and its seal are in good condition.
• The screw or the bushing holding the handle is lost or damaged.

How to check that it fits

The handle fits Thetford C220 series cassette toilets. You find the toilet model on the rating plate. The handle is grey, shaped like a lever with a round hole for the pivot, and the number 200736 is moulded in the plastic. Compare your old part with the photo before you start removing it.

Replacement

• Empty the waste-holding tank and remove it from the toilet through the service door.
• Undo the screw holding the old handle and remove the handle together with the bushing.
• Fit the new bushing and the new handle in the same position as the old ones.
• Fix the handle with the new screw from the kit without overtightening, so you do not damage the plastic.
• Slide the tank back in, move the handle a few times and check that the blade opens and closes fully.

Care

• Care for the blade seals regularly with a spray made for cassette toilets, so the blade moves easily and the handle is not overloaded.
• Do not use household cleaners, as they may permanently damage the seals and the plastic.
• If the blade still moves stiffly with a new handle, replace the blade and seals with the Fresh-Up Set C220.
