Thetford C223-S cassette toilet, C220 series - swivel bowl, electric flush, 18 l waste tank on wheels
- Thetford C223-S built-in cassette toilet from the C220 series. The plastic bowl swivels 2 x 90 degrees, the electric flush uses water from the vehicle supply, and you remove the 18 l tank on wheels through the service door.
The Thetford C223-S is a built-in cassette toilet for motorhomes, caravans or cabins from the C220 series, which the manufacturer launched in 2016. It has two parts: a toilet fixed in the bathroom and a removable waste-holding tank that you empty from outside the vehicle. The bowl swivels 2 x 90 degrees, so the toilet fits even a narrow bathroom and frees up space by the wall once turned. The toilet takes its flush water from the main water tank of the vehicle, so it has no separate flush-water tank and does not need a water fill door. The flush is electric and works with a single button. The waste-holding tank holds 18 l and has a level indicator plus wheels and a handle, so you can take it to the dump station without carrying it.

How a cassette toilet works
In the bathroom you use the toilet like the one at home: sit down, open the blade with the handle under the bowl, then flush with the button and close the blade. The contents go into the cassette, the waste-holding tank hidden in the toilet housing. The closed blade seals the tank off from the bowl and keeps odours out of the bathroom. When the indicator shows that the cassette is full, open the service door outside the vehicle, pull out the tank and wheel it to the dump station at the campsite.
Preparing for use
- Fill the main water tank of the vehicle, as the toilet takes its flush water from it.
- Open the service door outside the vehicle and remove the waste-holding tank.
- Pour water and a cassette additive, for example Aqua Kem Blue, into the tank in the dose given on its pack.
- Slide the tank back in and close the service door.
- Before flushing you can spray the bowl with a rinse product for a more effective flush.
Emptying the tank
- Check the level indicator to see whether the tank needs emptying.
- Remove the tank through the service door and wheel it to the dump station.
- Turn the pour-out spout and remove the cap.
- Point the spout down and hold the vent button with your thumb, so the contents flow out evenly without splashing.
- After emptying, rinse the tank with water, refit the cap and turn the spout back.
Installation
- The toilet is made for permanent installation in a recreational vehicle.
- You remove the tank through a Thetford service door 3, fitted in the vehicle wall in portrait or landscape position.
- The service door is not part of the set and must be ordered separately.
- The toilet needs a connection to the water supply of the vehicle and power for the electric flush.
- Have the toilet fitted by a workshop or install it following the manufacturer installation manual.
Care
- Clean with products made for cassette toilets. Normal household cleaners may permanently damage the seals and other toilet parts.
- Use toilet paper that dissolves quickly in water, for example Thetford Aqua Soft.
- Care for the blade seals regularly with a seal spray, so the blade moves easily and seals well.
- You can replace a worn blade and seals with the Fresh-Up Set C220.

Frequently asked questions
How does the C223-S differ from other C220 toilets?
The C223-S takes its flush water from the main water tank of the vehicle and has an electric flush. The C224-CW has its own 9 l flush-water tank and a manual flush, and the C223-CS is taller and wider.
Is the service door included?
No. The Thetford service door 3 is sold separately. It can be fitted in the vehicle wall in portrait or landscape position.
Which tank fits this toilet?
The Thetford C220 18 l cassette tank fits, in the standard version or the outside vent version. Both are linked above.
Can I clean the toilet with normal products?
No. Household cleaners may permanently damage the seals and other parts. Use products made for cassette toilets.
How full can the tank be while driving?
No more than three quarters full, and there should be no water in the bowl. This protects the vehicle against leaks.
